If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. – 1 John 1:8 (NIV)
Several standards of perfection exist for everyone. Perhaps the meal you had at that Italian restaurant set the bar on dining perfection. Maybe that vacation you took to that serene location where everything went well, including your travel… became a standard of perfection. Or even, that dessert you love, made by that certain person, is perfection.
All of these, and many more, are standards of perfection usually shared by you and your experiences. However, others may hate that cheesecake, or a friend visited your “recommended” Italian restaurant and wasn’t overly impressed. Standards… really aren’t standard are they?
When left up to us, we assign perfection based on a limited set of life experiences – even though we feel as if those standards are shared by everyone. In the end, we just aren’t capable of defining perfection for other people. But isn’t it interesting how often we attempt to define our perfection against the imperfections of others?
As Christians, we can’t set our own standards of perfection – it must be based on the standard of Christ. Never compare your faith to the faith of others… they aren’t perfect either. Confess your sin to Christ and strive to live according to His standard – you’ll get closer to perfection each day.

Locate in the Bible, 2 standards of perfection demonstrated by Christ.
PRAY: God, I’m not perfect. In fact – I’m flawed. Forgive me for setting my own goals of perfection based on the world around me. Open my eyes to your desire for me – to live more like Christ every day. Amen.
