As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. – Luke 9:51 (NIV)
Every great movie is built around a hero. We watch his story unfold and are introduced to flaws, weaknesses, or perhaps vulnerabilities that endear us to his plight. The hero is someone we root for and are often inspired to join him in his quest to “overcome”.
Without fail – there is a moment in a hero’s life when the tables turn. When the beatings and slurs become fuel. The bullies, enemies, and opposition become instigators. In the movie – it’s a turning point. It’s when the war drums begin to pound, the music begins to swell, and the defining shot of the hero comes into full view.
As we read Luke’s account of Christ – resolutely setting his eyes on Jerusalem – we can feel that moment. With determination, purpose, and searing confidence – our real Hero, Jesus Christ, pushed everything aside to finish the job – and He commands us to do the same.
In our own life, we come to a place where we must set our eyes on our Jerusalem. We must stand up from the “pushing down” and lean into the opposition with fierce resolve. Like our savior, we are called to live sacrificially – putting down the distractions, pushing through the opposition, and fighting for the ones to come after us.
Today – may you hear the war drums pound out a thunderous rhythm that announces – “Here we come and there’s nothing you can do about it!”
Today, may you set your eyes on greater things. Today – you are the hero that others are rooting on to victory. Today, you are called to rise up, push back, and fight for your faith and for the remnant that will come behind you.
Be the man God built you to be. Be the protector, the warrior, the defender, and the hero of your family, your community, and your culture. Today – get out of the traps and snares set by the world and live like a conqueror. We’re rooting for you, hero. Live into it!
THE RIGHT NEXT STEP
Identify one person who has been knocked down by life. Figure out how to help them up.
PRAY: Almighty God, we said “yes” to following You. Now, give us the courage to follow through on our commitment. Sound the drums in our soul when it’s our time to rise up to the challenge of defending others for Your sake. Amen.
