Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. – Proverbs 16:24
Something profound happens when our views, opinions, and words turn from critical to affirming. Our daily life begins to shift from pessimism to optimism. Bad days turn into good days and people who avoided you begin to inch closer to you.
Many of us are looking for the answer to contentment, joy, and fullness of life… who knew it was right behind our lips the entire time? As followers of Christ, we not only have the responsibility to be gracious – we have the responsibility of teaching others “grace”. We show that through our words and how we speak about others.
If you want to forget the hurts, the pain, the ugliness of what someone did to you… speak kindly of them. Search for something to celebrate – even if the celebration is one of “moving on”. Criticism loves company, however, even criticism tires of the constant barrage of bitterness.
A telling measure of our commitment to follow Christ, is how well we use our words to build others up – and forget the words that tear people down. If you want healing deep in your soul – find something positive to say about those near you… or say nothing at all.
THE RIGHT NEXT STEP:
Say one affirming thing to every person you meet today.
PRAY: God, I want to be known as a man who reflects your grace. You aren’t critical of me, so forgive me of being critical to others. Give me a spirit of encouragement and remove any bitterness from my soul. Amen.
