“What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. James 2:14-16 (NIV)
Faith is a profound gift God lavishes upon us. He plants the seed of faith into our soul as we are formed in our mother’s womb. Faith is what pulls us into God’s presence. However, exercising our faith is what keeps us there. When we exercise faith daily, our lives become richer and our stance becomes stronger.
Remember, the free gift of faith comes with a requirement… to love other people like God loves us. To give them all of ourselves by serving them with our abilities, our attention, and our resources. Our faith becomes stronger only when we place it into service.
Here are 3 easy ways to strengthen your faith:
- Volunteer to serve at the local food pantry, soup kitchen, or food bank.
- Deliver a box of groceries and supplies to a struggling family in your community.
- Volunteer to read the Bible to elderly and disabled individuals.
As we give ourselves away in service to others, we become fuller, richer, and better. Truly, the one who serves ends up with the biggest blessing.
THE RIGHT NEXT STEP
Think about the one thing that breaks you. Make that your primary area of service.
PRAY: God, show me how to put your gift of faith to work. Open my eyes to the hurting and match me up with the people that I can help. You’ve given me faith, now prod me to put it to work. Amen.
